ABB’s new radioactive-free multiphase flowmeter

New high-performing and compact meter, to measure real-time flow rates of produced oil, gas and water in the most challenging multiphase stream conditions

Sesto San Giovanni, Milan (Italy), September 11, 2014 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, launches the VIS Multi-Phase Flow Meter (MPFM) for measuring real-time production in the Oil and Gas Upstream sector.

ABB VIS (VEGA Isokinetic Sampling) Multi-Phase Flow Meter is the ideal solution for monitoring the flow rates of produced oil, gas and water close to the wellhead. VIS allows the measurement of three different phases at the same time with unmatched accuracy. The Multi-Phase Flow Meter can provide the same information and metering accuracy of conventional test separators in a small-sized product with no time delay and a much lower investment cost. ABB VIS is based on a unique and patented technology - the isokinetic sampling method that allows the withdrawal of a small representative portion of the main stream and separation into the different phases guaranteeing an absolute accuracy of the flow rate measurements.

ABB VIS Multi-Phase Flow Meter has been developed in collaboration with TEA Sistemi, a research company active in the upstream oil and gas sector, based in Pisa (Italy) and is designed to meet the most demanding requirements of the Oil and Gas sectors. Providing the best performing meter for Well Testing, Production Monitoring, Production Allocation and Reservoir Management. ABB VIS operates in all kinds of wet gas fields where the Gas Volume Fraction (GVF) is above 80% and its performance is not affected by even the most challenging conditions. When the gas content fraction is very high, VIS performance is superior.

VIS is also the best way to protect investments in aging reservoirs where GVF tends to increase and in oil wells subject to gas lift operation - where large amounts of gas are extracted together with the liquid phase.

The biggest benefit is that, unlike traditional multi-phase solutions, the ABB VIS is radioactive-free. This is of paramount importance when dealing with shipping, handling, commissioning and decommissioning procedures. It also very important when applying for import and export permits and with any maintenance action performed on the device. Furthermore, ABB VIS’ unique technology and design make it perfectly suited for gas storage fields where it is installed instead of traditional orifice plate. Here it also provides real-time liquid flowrate data that can be used to optimize and enhance gas extraction. ABB’s Multi-Phase Flow Meter has no size limitations and can be applied to all the usual pipe dimensions. In addition, the design can be customized in order to increase the gas turndown up to 100:1. The largest turndown ratio for this application available on the market.
